Wood is the obvious choice of course but other materials are available for your new garden shed. For example, bricks, logs, recycled sheet metal, stone, plywood, old doors, wooden pallets, fencing timber etc.

You can purchase many detailed shed plans online and some simpler shed plans are available for free. No matter which set of plans you use, do not feel compelled to use the materials they specify. You can change the roof covering to clay tiles, sheet metal, bags of cement, felt, timber, slate, timber, planks, plywood, insulation or anything else that would make the shed waterproof. All of these materials may be found on demolition sites and construction sites and quite often you can get them for free. Try to speak to the construction foreman before taking anything and that should ensure that you are not removing anything that was marked for re-use on the building site. Check at the site at the end of each day and you will be amazed at what is thrown away and it is all yours – totally free.
Check in with your local timber merchant and hardware store. They regularly get defective products. E.g. planks cut to the wrong dimensions etc. You probably won’t get these for free but you should be able to negotiate a discount for them.
Recycle materials left over from your previous projects. E.g. paint, nails, plywood, shingles etc.
Check your local newspapers and the classified ads for recyclable materials that may be of use to you.
The main thing is to become “green”. Start to use recycled materials. Not everything in your new garden shed has to be new. If you follow these tips, you will be able to build your shed very cheaply indeed.
